FATHER'S DAY GIFTS we have something suitable for every dad, daddy or father!!

Father's day, unlike Mother's day did not originate in the UK but in the US and unlike Mother's day in the UK it does not have a history going back centuries but is barely 100 years old and again unlike Mother's day it is not even recognised by the UK government as a public holiday.

Mrs John Bruce-Dodd of Washington State wanted a special day for her father in order to remember his selflessness and devotion to her and her siblings after her mother died whilst giving birth to her sixth child.

Her father, William Smart, was a veteran of the US Civil War and was so devoted to his children that rather than re-marry he brought up the children alone on a rural farm in Eastern Washington State.

When Sonora Dodd became an adult she wanted a way to show her deep appreciation to her father for his unswerving devotion to his family.  After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 the idea for an equivalent Father’s Day celebration started an idea forming in her head.  A year later on her father’s birthday, 19th June, in Spokane Washington, she celebrated the first Father’s Day.

Although the yearly date of Father's day varies in the UK,  Father's day became a national celebration in the USA for the first time in 1924. President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day but it was not until 1966 that it was set in statue in the USA to fall on the 3rd Sunday of June.
